A story about survival and the heroism of endurance. In a world that has taken everything from you, and that demands everything of you, what is the silent, brute courage it takes to get up every day and put one foot in front of the other, forward?

Ntozake Shange relocates Brecht’s text to the Reconstruction Era. Following the end of the Civil War, peddler Ma Courage predicts the death of all three of her children, as they cross the land every which way on the trail of survival. One by one, her children are claimed by violence of the war, til she is left to continue pulling her wagon and wares on, alone.
